Short, exact definitions of the terms Calavion uses consistently.
Real-work hiring
An approach to hiring in which an applicant works through a bounded piece of a company’s own handled work, and the employer reviews what they did, instead of relying only on descriptions of how they would act.
Work environment
The controlled space Calavion prepares from a company’s handled work, where an applicant can read records, communicate and take actions. See Product.
Approved version
The exact prepared version of an environment a company has reviewed and approved. It does not change, and each invitation is tied to the version approved at the time.
Replay
The record an employer receives after an applicant works an environment: what was available, what the applicant did, what changed and what stayed open. Not a video, a screen capture or an AI judgment. See Replay.
Evidence
What the record shows happened inside the environment: messages, actions, records opened, consequences and open work.
Observation
Something the record shows an applicant did. It does not require guessing at intent.
Interpretation
A judgment formed on an observation. A conclusion, not a fact, and different reviewers can reach different ones.
Opportunity
Whether an environment made a behavior possible to observe at all.
Outstanding obligation
Something left unresolved inside the environment. A well-reasoned open item is legitimate evidence, not an automatic failure.
Company work reconstruction
Calavion preparing an environment by hand from work a company has handled, replacing identifying details, and asking the company to approve the result. See Methodology.
Calavion Real-Work Method
The six-stage Calavion approach: bring work the company has handled, prepare an environment with Calavion, approve an exact version, let applicants work, review Replay, compare and decide. People make the hiring decision. See The Calavion Real-Work Method.
Source / assumption / gap
The labels on Calavion’s “what we understood” sheet. A statement is either taken from the company’s records, taken from the company’s rules, an assumption Calavion made because the material did not say, or something Calavion looked for and did not find.
Bounded work
A piece of work with a clear start and end: records to read, a rule that limits what a person may do, someone affected, and a consequence that follows.
Four-part test
The check for whether a piece of work suits an exercise: records to read, a rule that limits what a person may do, someone affected, and a consequence that follows. See Suitable work.
Evidence Ladder
Calavion’s five kinds of hiring evidence, ordered by how directly they show the work itself: claim, account, result, artefact, conduct. The order is not a ranking of which best predicts job performance. See the Evidence Ladder.
Applicant notice
What Calavion shows an applicant before they start: what is recorded, who sees it, and where to ask about it. The current version is applicant-notice-2026-10-19-v3. See What we tell applicants.
Employer-ordered shortlist
The employer’s own ordering of applicants. The software checks that order against approved criteria and asks for a reason where it conflicts. Calavion does not produce the ordering.
